US authorities warn of major winter storm targeting northeast

A significant winter storm is forecast to hit the US Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, home to 58 million people, bringing blizzards and heavy snow.

WASHINGTON: US authorities have issued a warning about a major winter storm approaching the country’s northeast.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that the significant winter weather system is forecast to impact the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast from Sunday through Monday.

She specified that blizzards, heavy snowfall, and strong winds are possible from New Jersey to southeastern New England.

Coastal areas are expected to be hit the hardest by the incoming storm.

The northeastern region is home to approximately 58 million people according to the latest US Census Bureau estimates.

This follows severe winter weather that affected much of the United States in January.

Southern states like Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana, unaccustomed to harsh winters, were hit particularly hard at that time.

Those regions experienced heavy snow, freezing rain, and resulting widespread disruptions.

The previous storms led to extensive flight cancellations, power outages, and an increase in weather-related deaths.
