OTOPENI (Romania): Irishman Daniel Wiffen won his third gold medal at the European short course swimming championships on Sunday, breaking the world record in the 800m freestyle which had stood for 15 years.
Wiffen eclipsed Australian Grant Hackett’s mark set in 2008 by almost three seconds, clocking 7min 20.46sec to smash the sport’s oldest world record.
The 22-year-old added the 800m title to the golds he claimed earlier this week in Otopeni, Romania, in the 400m and 1500m freestyle. - AFP
