Anthony Joshua’s crash caused by burst tyre and speeding, say investigators

Investigators say a burst tyre and excessive speed caused Anthony Joshua’s car crash in Nigeria, which killed two of his associates.

LAGOS: A burst tyre and excessive speed caused the car crash involving former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, Nigerian investigators have said.

The Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) in Ogun state stated its preliminary findings on Tuesday.

Spokesman Babatunde Akinbiyi said the SUV Joshua was travelling in was overspeeding when its front passenger-side tyre burst.

“That led to loss of control before the vehicle now swerved and rammed into the stationary truck that was parked,” Akinbiyi told AFP.

The crash occurred on Monday morning on a main road linking Lagos and Ibadan in southwest Nigeria.

Joshua, 36, was admitted to Lagos’s Duchess International Hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.

His promoter, Matchroom, said the boxer’s “close friends and team members” Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele were killed.

Nigerian police confirmed the two victims died “at the scene”.

Pictures and videos shared online showed a shirtless Joshua grimacing in pain as he was helped from the wreckage.

Other images showed the mangled remains of a black sports utility vehicle.

Joshua, a British national of Nigerian heritage, often visits the southwest region where his family hails from.
