Striker Haqimi Azim rejoins Malaysia’s U-23 squad for the SEA Games semifinal vs Thailand, boosting the team’s attack after a personal absence
STRIKER Muhammad Haqimi Azim Rosli will rejoin the national Under-23 squad for their SEA Games men’s football semifinal against Thailand on Monday.
National head coach Mohd Nafuzi Zain confirmed the forward, who was on compassionate leave, is scheduled to report back to the team.
“Haqimi has just gone through a difficult period, but he himself informed us that if the team qualified for the semifinals, he would return,” said Nafuzi.
The coach stated the team needs him as several players are injured, noting Haqimi is the squad’s only available striker.
Haqimi scored in Malaysia’s 4-1 opening win over Laos but missed the subsequent 2-0 loss to Vietnam.
Nafuzi also confirmed Sabah FC striker Fergus Tierney will miss the semifinal due to his club’s FA Cup final against Johor Darul Ta’zim.
The coach expressed confidence in his players’ ability to challenge host nation Thailand and secure a place in the final.
“In terms of play and individual quality, Thailand are a strong team, but qualifying for the semifinals has somewhat changed the situation,” he said.
Defender Ahmad Aysar Hadi Mohd Shapri urged his teammates to maintain focus and composure despite the expected large home crowd.
“We just need to play the way we should, put full focus and maintain composure,” said Aysar.
