Innovative masks for surviving in the pandemic

Masks are becoming a part of our fashion accessory due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As such, it’s not a surprise when designers and inventors alike are creating fashion-forward masks with its own special features.

Here are some of the ‘outrageous’ masks we’ve seen yet online:

1. Sticky mask

Wearing masks for a long time can hurt the back of the ears so Dr SM Yuen from Atlas Medical- Derma-Regen Clinic, created the self-adhesive VX mask with a filter in-between two hydrophobic, non-woven layers. The mask without ear loops is perfect for those going for an appointment with the doctor, beautician or hairdresser.

2. See-through mask

A see-through mask is beneficial for those who rely on facial cues to communicate such as the people in the deaf community. The Leaf mask is apparently the first Food and Drug Administration-registered clear mask. The mask has an exhaust valve to release exhaled air, activated carbon filter for odour removal, an aerospace-grade HEPA filter which removes 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns and a built-in YVC light for self-purifying.

3. Mask for musicians

Two Japanese companies recently collaborated to create a mask for musicians who play wind instruments. Tech Nad in collaboration with Shimamura Music created a mask with a flap near the mouth where musicians can play the musical instrument while being protected.

4. CLIU mask

The CLIU mask is one of the most ‘avant-garde’ design yet. The design and shape of the mask is different from the usual because it resembles a large goggle. The mask is clear with anti-fogging properties and can be connected to a phone app to monitor air quality. The app also alerts users if there’s an outbreak nearby. Eating and drinking is also made easy just by simply lifting the clear, magnetic flap. It also comes with a charging dock which doubles as a UV light dock to sanitise the mask.

5. Self-sterilising masks

The Sonovia Sonomask and Livingguard Mask claim to be able to filter out particles and viruses with its fabric mask. The Livingguard mask’s treated textile is said to kill 99.9% of the Covid-19 virus. The duo layers of the mask are said to be positively-charged which makes it a magnet for negatively-charged bacteria and viruses. Once in contact, the bacteria and viruses are destroyed which lowers the risk of the wearer being infected.

The Sonovia Sonomask is a polycotton blend mask which is coated with zinc oxide nano-particles using ultrasound technology. Zinc is known for its disinfecting properties and is used to destroy bacteria, fungi and viruses which comes into contact with the mask. The manufacturer also claims that the mask effectively kills 99% against viruses similar to Covid-19.
