Umno’s cooperation with DAP merely to save country – Tok Mat

Mohamad Hasan says Umno joined unity government to end instability, not form alliance with DAP.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno’s decision to be part of the current federal government was driven solely by the need to save the country from prolonged political instability, says Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

At the same time, Mohamad reiterated that Umno has no direct collaboration with DAP.

Mohamad stressed that Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) never entered into a political alliance with DAP, but instead agreed to a framework to ensure the country could be governed following the 15th General Election (GE15), which resulted in a hung Parliament.

“We were not working with DAP. We entered into an agreement to manage and govern the country,” he told reporters in a press conference at the sideline of 2025 Umno Annual General Assembly.

Mohamad was responding to calls by PAS for Umno to leave DAP in order to realise the agenda of a so-called House of unification of the Malay.

He said at the time, Malaysia was without a government for more than five days after GE15, as no coalition was able to command a majority to form the federal administration.

“After the election, I had said that Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) should form the government, but they were unable to do so. When PN rejected the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree to form a unity government, we stepped in.”

Mohamad said Umno and BN’s priority then was to ensure that the country continued to be governed and did not descend into further uncertainty.

“Our priority at that time was governance. We joined the government based on an agreement. We are not in the government alone, and we are guided by clear red lines.”

He also reminded the public that Umno’s participation in the unity government was anchored on responsibility and national interest, not partisan considerations.

“What matters is that the country is administered and the people are not made to suffer because of political deadlock.”
