SEOUL: A British tour agency plans to host an international amateur golf tournament in North Korea this year.
The event, sponsored by UK-based Lupine Travel, aims to revive the North Korean Amateur Open last held in 2016.
According to the event’s website, the tournament is scheduled for 2026 over two days, featuring one practice day and one strokeplay day.
The contest is open to amateur golfers of all nationalities except citizens of South Korea and the United States, who are barred from visiting the country.
It will be held at the Pyongyang Golf complex, described by organisers as the world’s “most exclusive” course.
Located about 27 kilometres from the capital, the course was reportedly built in the early 1980s and opened in 1987.
It was officially opened to celebrate the 75th birthday of North Korea’s founder, Kim Il Sung.
The impoverished North has been seeking to revive inbound tourism to earn hard currency amid international sanctions over its nuclear programmes.
This has included developing lavish coastal and mountain resorts to attract visitors.
The amateur golf contest was held annually from 2011 until its suspension, largely due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
North Korea closed its borders during the pandemic, halting nearly all international travel and tourism activities.
