Terengganu tables RM60 million surplus budget for 2026

Terengganu’s RM1.998 billion 2026 budget focuses on social welfare and economic growth, with a RM60 million surplus and major development allocations.

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu state government has tabled a surplus budget of RM60 million for 2026 with total revenue estimated at RM1.998 billion.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar presented the “Driving Potential, Boosting Performance” themed budget at the State Legislative Assembly sitting.

The budget allocates RM1.938 billion for operating expenditure, including RM450 million for development projects.

“The state government aims to generate total revenue of RM1.998 billion, resulting in a projected surplus of RM60 million,” he said.

The social sector receives the largest development expenditure share at RM323.80 million, representing 72% of total allocation.

The economic sector gets RM92.84 million, a significant increase to 20.6% from 4.4% in the 2025 budget.

Administrative functions are allocated RM33.37 million, accounting for 7.4% of development spending.

As of October 31, the state generated RM261.61 million in revenue, achieving 93% of its annual estimate.

This represents RM16.62 million more than the same period last year.

Expenditure during this period stood at RM1.416 billion, allowing the state to avoid fiscal deficit while maintaining services.

Government priorities focus on enhancing governance, strengthening economic resilience, and sustaining social needs.

Economic growth initiatives will emphasise high-value investments, industrialisation, and halal industry development.

Other measures include streamlining land lease applications and upgrading industrial areas.

Food security efforts will focus on increasing agricultural production and developing food value chains.

High-impact programmes under the Terengganu Agricultural Strategic Plan 2024-2030 address sustainable resource management.

These initiatives aim to make agriculture productive, climate-resilient, and economically contributive.

The government also plans awareness campaigns against civil and Syariah offences.

Key programmes include the Indahnya Hidup Bersyariat Carnival and mental health initiatives for students.

Authorities will draft enactments addressing online Syariah offences to enable legal enforcement.

The Terengganu State Syariah Compliance Committee will strengthen monitoring and compliance across agencies. – Bernama
