The nation mourns the loss of Royal Professor Tan Sri Dr Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas, a leading Islamic thinker who passed away at 94

KUALA LUMPUR: Prominent Islamic scholar Royal Professor Tan Sri Dr Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas has died. He was 94.

The news was shared by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan on social media.

He said the scholar’s passing was a loss of a priceless gem of knowledge for the Muslim community.

“Almarhum was known as a mujaddid, thinker and scholar who rekindled the torch of knowledge and adab in the Islamic world,” Zulkifli stated.

He added that the late scholar’s thoughts contributed to the establishment of institutions like ABIM, UKM, and ISTAC.

Although the nation mourns, the minister said the scholar left a legacy that will educate future generations.

The funeral prayer will be held at the Al-Taqwa Mosque in Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

He will be laid to rest at the Bukit Kiara Muslim Cemetery today. In October 2024, Sultan Ibrahim conferred the title of Royal Professor on him for his contributions to Islamic education.

Royal Professor is the highest and most esteemed professorship in Malaysia, bestowed by the King.
