A Malaysian man’s simple calculations of RM45,000 spent on fireworks could have supported 90 families

A Malaysian man’s estimated that fireworks displays across just one district may have cost enough to support 90 underprivileged families during the festive season.

Sharing his simple calculations on Threads.com, the man broke down the numbers methodically.

With individual firecracker units priced at an average of RM300 each and lasting approximately two minutes, a continuous 30-minute display across a single village would require around 15 units.

“The quantity of firecrackers: 30 minutes divided by 2 minutes is 15 pieces,” he explained.

Multiplying that figure across 10 kampung (villages) within a single district, he arrived at a combined total of RM45,000 — all spent within a single night of celebration.

(A total of 10 kampung (villages) in one district had fireworks for 30 minutes, non-stop.

As per his calculations: RM300 × 15 pieces × 10 villages = RM45,000)

His alternative was simple: had that same sum been redirected toward festive aid, each of 90 low-income families could have received RM500 to ease their Hari Raya expenses — enough to cover basic necessities, new clothing, or a proper celebratory meal.

(RM45,000 divided by RM500 = 90 families could have benefitted)

“If RM45,000 was donated to poor families in that district for the Hari Raya celebration, it would be RM500 per family,” he wrote, adding that 90 households stood to benefit from what amounted to a fleeting light show.

Closing his post with a quiet appeal, he wrote: “Hopefully, we can learn a lesson.”
