Matt Reeves unveils Pattinson’s return as The Batman sequel moves to February 2028
ROBERT Pattinson is back in the Batsuit in the first camera test for The Batman Part II.
Director Matt Reeves released the 30-second teaser on social media, offering the first footage of Pattinson’s return as Bruce Wayne. It shows Batman standing beside the rotating lights of a police vehicle as snow falls around him.
The footage provides a closer look at the character’s updated costume, although the dim lighting keeps many of its details obscured. Combined with an earlier image of the Batmobile fitted with snow tyres, the teaser also suggests the sequel will take place during winter.
The brief first look arrived with less welcome news for fans. The Batman Part II has been delayed again and will now open in cinemas on Feb 18, 2028, almost six years after The Batman was released in March 2022.
The sequel was most recently scheduled for Oct 1, 2027, after previously holding release dates in 2025 and 2026. The latest postponement will reportedly give Reeves additional time for post-production.
Pattinson will be joined by returning cast members Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Jayme Lawson and Gil Perez-Abraham.
New additions include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch. Their roles have not been officially disclosed.
Reeves wrote the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin. Plot details remain under wraps, including the identity of the film’s main villain, although Reeves previously said the antagonist has not been properly explored in a Batman film before.
The director has also indicated the sequel will examine Gotham City’s deep-rooted corruption and take Bruce into areas he could not have anticipated during the first film.
The Batman Part II will remain separate from the main DC Universe overseen by DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. The film will instead be released under the DC Elseworlds label.
The Batman grossed more than US$772 million (RM3.27 billion) worldwide and received three Academy Award nominations for sound, makeup and hairstyling and visual effects.
Its story was expanded through HBO series The Penguin (2024), which followed Farrell’s Oz Cobb after the events of the film. Farrell and co-star Cristin Milioti later won Golden Globe awards for their performances.
