A night curfew is imposed in Syria’s Latakia after attacks on Alawite neighbourhoods, following deadly protests triggered by a bombing in Homs.

DAMASCUS: Syrian authorities have imposed an overnight curfew in the port city of Latakia following sectarian attacks.

The interior ministry announced the curfew would run from 5:00 pm on Tuesday until 6:00 am on Wednesday.

The measure comes after individuals attacked predominantly Alawite neighbourhoods on Monday, damaging cars and vandalising shops.

These attacks occurred a day after three people were killed during mass protests by the minority Alawite community.

The protests were triggered by a recent bombing in the city of Homs.

One of those killed was a member of Syria’s security forces, according to a security source.

Authorities said forces had “reinforced their deployment in a number of neighbourhoods” to enhance security.

Latakia is a mixed city in Syria’s Alawite coastal heartland but also has Sunni-majority areas.

Since the ousting of longtime Alawite ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, the minority group has faced repeated attacks.

Hundreds of Alawites were killed in sectarian massacres in their coastal heartland in March.

Despite government assurances of protection, the country’s minorities remain wary of their future.
