A Malaysian was shocked after being charged RM21.20 for a single prawn at a nasi kandar outlet, sparking debate online.

EVERY Malaysian knows that at nasi kandar eateries, it is generally not advisable to take seafood dishes, as they can be quite pricey. In some cases, a single piece of seafood can burn a hole in one’s pocket.

A Malaysian was recently left baffled after allegedly being charged a hefty sum for a single prawn at a nasi kandar chain restaurant.

Now viral on Threads, images attached to the post showed a plate of nasi kandar consisting of rice, fried chicken, salted egg, gravy, and a large fried prawn.

The location of the nasi kandar chain eatery was not specified in the post.

According to the receipt, the total bill came to RM37.50, with the single prawn accounting for a significant portion of the cost at RM21.20.

“I just wanted to try the prawn. I did not expect the price to be like that,” the customer said in the post.

Netizens were equally stunned by the price. Some pointed out that their entire meals at other nasi kandar outlets or eateries cost about the same as the prawn alone.

One user claimed that the nasi kandar franchise in question does not usually charge that much for a single prawn, saying prices are typically capped at around RM13.

“Seafood tom yam with five prawns of that size costs about the same,” another user remarked.

“Never take any ‘rare’ items at this place. Just stick to the basics — rice, chicken, and salted egg — and you’ll be fine,” suggested another commenter.

Meanwhile, one user shared their experience, saying: “I went to a nasi kandar restaurant in Penang and only paid RM8 for a single prawn, but you paid RM21.20.”
