Female passengers share incidents of men entering Women’s coaches, highlighting the need for safety and extra protection
WOMEN’S Coaches in trains are designated for female passengers only, yet some men continue to enter the pink coaches, ignoring their purpose.
Several netizens took to Threads to share their thoughts on the increasing number of male passengers spotted in Women’s coaches.
Teoh Russell commented that the coaches are dedicated to women’s safety and comfort, mainly to reduce sexual harassment cases.
“Primarily for women, but young boys under 12 and passengers with disabilities (with female caretakers) are allowed,” he explained.
He added that women travelling with a male companion, such as a husband, family member, or friend, should use the general coach.
“Leave the Women’s coaches for women commuting alone or in female-only pairs. If anyone misuses this facility, please speak up and make a stand,” he stressed.
When a no-face “fake account” user called his post “nerd,” Russell replied, “I’m not nerd, I’m civilised.”
Meanwhile, @jaytrice10_ questioned, “If men in Women’s coaches become normal, then what is the point of having Women’s coaches?”
In another post, Tun ‘Alia Nadirah shared an incident on the MRT from Sungai Buloh, where an elderly man entered the Women’s coach and stood very close to her. Assuming he hadn’t realised, she politely alerted him.
“Instead, he shouted at me, ‘Stupid!’ ‘Crazy!’ I was shocked and momentarily stunned. He glared at me, eyes wide, yelling angrily. I guess his male ego was challenged,” she said.
“I stayed quiet at first, but then he became even more aggressive. I got angry and responded verbally, which seemed to set him off further, and he stormed out at the next station,” she added.
She emphasised that men who respect women understand the concept of Women’s coaches without question.
“Some sexual perpetrators harass women, and it’s often hard to confront them without proof. That’s why Women’s coaches are necessary, providing extra protection for female commuters,” she said.
