Unemployed man jailed for possession of terrorism-related documents

KUALA LUMPUR: An unemployed man was sentenced to a total of four years’ jail by the High Court here today after he pleaded guilty to two charges with possession of 40 images, 63 videos and 15 copies of documents related to terrorism.

Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali sentenced Muhammad Aabid Zarkasi, 22, to two years jail on each count, to be served concurrently from the date of arrest, which was Sept 8, 2017.

In the judgment, Mohd Nazlan said the objective of the punishment was to allow the offender to feel remorse for the offence committed and as a lesson for others.

He hoped the sentence would make the accused realised his mistakes, adding that terrorism was becoming more serious and that it could jeopardise public order, as well as hamper the country’s development, but said the offence committed by Muhammad Aabid did not cause injury and losses to anyone.

Muhammad Aabid qas charged with committing the offences by having the images, videos and copies of the documents on his handphone and a pen drive at a house at Jalan Maju 3, Taman Serai Maju, Bagan Serai, Kerian, Perak at 11.05 pm on Sept 8, 2017.

He was charged under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code, wand punishable under Section130JB(1) of the same law, which provides an imprisonment for up to seven years, or fine, and liable to forfeiture of the items involved in the alleged offence, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Fadzlan Mohd Noor prosecuted, while lawyer Mohamad Hafiz Jalaludin represented Muhammad Aabid. — Bernama
