14 held in anti-migrant smuggling raid in Kota Tinggi

Police arrested 13 Indonesian nationals and a local man in an integrated operation against migrant smuggling in Kota Tinggi

KOTA TINGGI: Police arrested 13 Indonesian nationals and a local man in an integrated operation against migrant smuggling at Pantai Sungai Rengit and Felda Air Tawar here last Sunday.

Kota Tinggi district police chief Supt Yusof Othman said acting on a tip-off, police raided a house in the Sungai Rengit area between 11.45 pm on Sunday and 4 am yesterday.

He said during the raid, police arrested 10 Indonesian men and a woman believed to have just entered from a neighbouring country.

Further checks revealed that all the suspects failed to produce valid travel documents, Yusof said in a statement today.

Following the arrests, he said police detained two more Indonesian men at the Felda Air Tawar plantation and a local man at Felda Air Tawar suspected of involvement in migrant smuggling activities.

“All those detained were taken to the District Police Headquarters here for further investigation,” Yusof said, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

Members of the public with information related to migrant smuggling are urged to come forward and report it at the nearest police station or via the Kota Tinggi district police headquarters hotline at 07-8831222.
