Malaysia’s capital market poised for next growth leap

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim launches a new masterplan to strengthen capital raising, reward business dynamism, embed sustainability, and broaden economic participation.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today called for a renewed leap forward to unlock the full potential of Malaysia’s capital market amidst a complex global economy and rapidly evolving investor expectations.

He launched the strategic Capital Market Masterplan (CMP) 2026–2030, which aims to position the market as a key driver of national growth and economic prosperity over a 20-year horizon.

The blueprint specifically targets four core objectives: to strengthen capital raising, reward business dynamism, embed sustainability as a driver of value, and broaden meaningful participation across the economy.

“Our capital market must power this transition by providing meaningful pathways for companies to raise funds efficiently, scale with confidence, and innovate with purpose,” Anwar said in his keynote address at the launch event.

He emphasised that the masterplan complements national initiatives like the National Energy Transition Roadmap by mobilising capital at scale towards sectors driving sustainable growth.

A critical focus will be on widening the pipeline of companies ready to enter public markets, with efforts to strengthen Bumiputera participation deemed indispensable for building a more inclusive economy.

Anwar stressed that Malaysian companies must scale up and strengthen their regional presence to compete globally as technological advances rapidly reshape industries.

He noted that ASEAN is among the world’s fastest-growing markets, but success demands scale, capital, and talent.

“Under the CMP, capital market intermediaries will play a central role in creating market-based pathways for companies with Malaysian ASEAN Business Entities status and Bumiputera-owned ventures to expand beyond our shores,” he added.

The government also encourages deeper exploration of waqf-based financing, other Islamic social finance solutions, and blended finance models to ensure capital reaches those who need it most.

The launch was also attended by Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan and Securities Commission chairman Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi.
