Civil servants key to policy continuity and national progress

PM Anwar says strong public service system with integrity and commitment is essential for Malaysia’s development and policy continuity

BANGI: The strength of a country needs to be supported by a robust, integrity-based and committed public service system with civil servants as the backbone of the country’s policy continuity and progress, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar said confidence in the capabilities of civil servants was among the factors that prompted him to focus on efforts to strengthen leadership and efficiency of the public service at all levels.

“If civil servants have close ties with the people, understand our development philosophy and are committed, they will make a great contribution to the country,” he said.

He said this at the Prime Minister and Chief Secretary to the Government’s Session with Civil Servants in the Central Zone at Universiti Islam Selangor here, today.

Also present were Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and Director-General of the Public Service Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz.

In conjunction with the National Day celebrations next month, Anwar said Malaysians should use the occasion to strengthen the nation by embracing local values, identity and culture while remaining open to progress and innovation.

He said this should begin with character-building and moral integrity, in line with Islamic teachings that emphasise self-purification as the foundation of human development and national progress.

“If we want to build the nation, as we have outlined through the MADANI framework, it must be grounded in values and good character. We must reach for the skies by embracing new technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing. If we fail to do so, we will be left behind.

“But as we reach for the skies, we must remain rooted to the ground. What does that mean? It means holding firmly to our faith, moral values, compassion, culture and national identity. That is how we give meaning to independence,” he said.
