LKIM allocates RM1.8 million to aid 628 fishermen nationwide

The Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia has disbursed RM1.8 million this year to help 628 fishermen with home and boat repairs

BACHOK: The Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) has allocated RM1.8 million this year to assist 628 fishermen nationwide through its Disaster Relief and Fishermen Welfare Scheme.

LKIM chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil said the aid covers repairs to homes and fishing boats damaged by natural disasters like floods and storms.

He stated that the scheme provides a maximum of RM10,000 per case, depending on the extent of the damage.

“If the damage exceeds this limit, LKIM will request additional aid from the government through other schemes,” he told reporters at the Madani Anak Nelayan Kembali Ke Sekolah programme.

Faiz added that the initiative aims to ease the burden on fishermen while supporting community welfare and national food security.

Earlier, he presented school supplies worth RM8,600 to 100 children of fishermen in Bachok.

Each child received a school bag, cap, water bottle, and a RM50 voucher.

Commenting on fish supply during the northeast monsoon, Faiz assured consumers of sufficient stock.

LKIM holds a stockpile of 300 tonnes, while private companies have an additional 1,600 tonnes available.

He encouraged the public to diversify their protein sources during the monsoon to reduce dependency on seafood.

LKIM also aims to educate consumers on purchasing fish according to breeding seasons to avoid high prices. – Bernama
