The Penang state government is prioritising land acquisition and resident resettlement for the Mutiara Line LRT, with only 12 houses initially affected in the Sungai Dua area.
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang state government is currently prioritising land acquisition and the resettlement of affected residents for the ongoing Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow confirmed that project work is proceeding in full swing according to the established schedule, with the state government handling these specific land and resettlement matters.
He stated that various schedules have been set to complete the relocation process and hand over sites to the project contractor.
All engineering aspects and the project contract itself remain the responsibility of the developer, the Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp), and its appointed contractor.
Chow revealed that so far, only about a dozen houses in the Sungai Dua area have been identified for the initial evacuation process.
“There are not many cases, only about a dozen houses because the project line enters the village next to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) office there,” he said when met at an event here.
The Mutiara Line LRT project, which began construction in 2025, is expected to begin operations in December 2031.
It will cover approximately 29.67 kilometres with 20 stations and two provisional stations upon completion.
The line is designed to improve connectivity between Penang Island and the mainland, aiming to reduce road congestion and enhance public accessibility.
