Authorities urge public help to identify vehicle in viral MEX video, with driver facing potential jail time for impersonation and traffic offences.
KUALA LUMPUR: Police are appealing for public assistance to identify a civilian vehicle captured in a viral video using an illegal siren and flashing blue lights.
The incident occurred during congestion on the Maju Expressway (MEX) yesterday.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa (pic) said no police report has been lodged over the incident so far.
Analysis of the one-minute video and social media comments has so far failed to reveal the vehicle’s registration number.
“The act shown is believed to constitute an offence under Rule 138(1) of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Rules 1959,” he said in a statement today.
This rule prohibits the installation of flashing warning lights on vehicles other than authorised emergency vehicles.
If convicted, the individual may be charged under Section 119(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
This carries a penalty of a fine up to RM2,000 or a jail term of up to six months.
Investigations could also proceed under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating a public servant.
That offence is punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
Members of the public with information are urged to contact the Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station at 03-2071 9999.
They can also provide information at any nearby police station.
