Universiti Malaysia Kelantan has implemented 21 community projects in Kampung Bukit Tiu, impacting over 1,000 residents with RM1 million in funding
MACHANG: Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) has implemented 21 community projects in Kampung Bukit Tiu over the past six months through its Kampung Angkat MADANI initiative.
UMK vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Arham Abdullah said the projects involved infrastructure upgrades, income-generation programmes, and community service activities.
“From March to December this year, UMK has implemented a total of 21 community projects in Kampung Bukit Tiu, positively impacting more than 1,000 local residents,” he said at the programme’s launch.
The initiative was backed by an allocation of RM1 million from the Ministry of Finance, with funds fully utilised this year.
Around 500 UMK students and staff from 10 faculties participated in the programmes, fostering stronger university-community ties.
Initiatives included assisting small traders with shop management, business visibility, and marketing knowledge.
“The feedback received from traders is very encouraging and shows increased confidence and potential for income generation,” Arham said.
UMK also implemented a catfish farming project involving seven local participants, each receiving a breeding pond and some 2,000 fry.
The harvest is expected to provide extra income to participants and benefit the local economy.
Arham said UMK focused on developing entrepreneurship and agro-based industries, leveraging its proven expertise.
Commenting on flood preparations, Arham said UMK had activated an operations room following rain forecasts.
The Department of Irrigation and Drainage has added a new diesel pump, bringing the total to five electric and two diesel pumps for drainage.
Monitoring is continuous, with clear standard operating procedures for student evacuation if needed.
Arham assured parents that student safety is always UMK’s top priority. – Bernama
