A 43-year-old woman lost RM166,000 after being tricked into a fake investment scheme she found on a social networking app.
KUALA BERANG: A 43-year-old cake factory worker lost RM166,000 after falling victim to an online investment scam.
Hulu Terengganu police chief Supt Sharudin Abdul Wahab said the woman met a man on the social networking app Litmatch on Jan 15.
The suspect persuaded her to join an investment scheme promising quick and high returns.
“Convinced, she sold her jewellery and inherited property and also withdrew her savings before making 16 online transactions worth RM166,000 into several bank accounts as instructed,” he said in a statement.
The woman realised she had been deceived when the suspect refused to return her capital and profits.
She subsequently lodged a police report.
“The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code,” Sharudin said.
He urged the public to get verified information from official sources or to carry out checks via the Semakmule portal or the NSRC 997 hotline to avoid being scammed.
