Sarawak police seize 25kg of meth worth RM1.25 million

Sarawak police arrest a 63-year-old man and seize 25kg of methamphetamine worth RM1.25 million in Kuching.

KUCHING: Sarawak police seized 25 kilogrammes (kg) of suspected methamphetamine worth about RM1.25 million, believed to be enough to supply about 125,000 drug users, following the arrest of a 63-year-old local man in MJC Batu Kawa here.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the arrest, made on July 15, was resulted from an intelligence-led operation with the suspect detained inside a Toyota Fortuner sport utility vehicle (SUV) at a parking area.

“A further inspection of the vehicle uncovered 25 kg of suspected methamphetamine, with the seizure estimated to be worth RM1.25 million and capable of being abused by about 125,000 drug addicts.

“The suspect is believed to have acted as a runner for a drug trafficking syndicate. Checks also revealed previous offences under the Entertainment Ordinance 2000 and the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, but no prior drug-related record, while his initial urine screening tested negative,” he said in a statement today.

The suspect has been remanded for seven days from July 16 to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction.

He added that police would continue intensifying comprehensive, aggressive and integrated enforcement operations to detect, track down and cripple drug trafficking syndicates, including disrupting supply chains, tracing and seizing criminal proceeds, and ensuring all those involved are brought to justice.
