Iran welcomes Indonesia’s mediation offer in US conflict

Iran has welcomed Indonesia’s offer to mediate its conflict with the United States, following a series of deadly strikes and the death of its supreme leader.

JAKARTA: Iran’s embassy in Jakarta has formally welcomed Indonesia’s offer to mediate between Tehran and Washington, following a series of US and Israeli strikes against the Islamic republic.

The embassy issued a statement welcoming the readiness of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to travel to Tehran for mediation, provided both parties agree to the initiative.

It also emphasised the importance of Indonesian officials taking a firm stance in condemning what it termed the aggression and crimes of the United States and Israel.

The diplomatic development follows the confirmation by Iranian state television on Sunday of the death of the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

This confirmation came hours after US President Donald Trump claimed Khamenei had been killed, following waves of US and Israeli air strikes on Saturday that prompted Iranian retaliation.

President Trump warned on Sunday that Washington would hit Iran with a force never seen before if it retaliated against the recent strikes.

Indonesia’s foreign ministry had announced on Saturday that President Prabowo was willing to undertake the mediation mission to Tehran.
