Carrick faces Man City in United debut as managers fight for jobs

Michael Carrick’s first game as Man United boss is a derby against City, while Tottenham’s Thomas Frank and West Ham’s Nuno battle to keep their jobs.

MANCHESTER: Michael Carrick faces a baptism of fire in his first match as Manchester United’s interim manager with a derby against title-chasing Manchester City on Saturday.

The former United midfielder aims to galvanise a season derailed by just one win in six league games before Ruben Amorim’s dismissal.

Carrick said his team will meet the challenge “head on” as United seek points to close a three-point gap to fourth-placed Liverpool for Champions League qualification.

He previously had an unbeaten three-game interim spell at United in 2021 and later managed Middlesbrough.

At the other end of the table, Tottenham’s Thomas Frank and West Ham’s Nuno Espirito Santo are fighting to save their jobs ahead of their London derby clash.

Spurs have won only four of their last 17 games, slipping to 14th and exiting both domestic cups.

Nuno, sacked by Tottenham after 17 games in 2021, has just two wins in 16 league matches since joining West Ham, who sit seven points from safety.

League leaders Arsenal, pursuing an unprecedented quadruple, face Nottingham Forest aiming to improve a poor record of one win in their last five visits to the City Ground.

Forest manager Sean Dyche labelled his team’s recent FA Cup performance “unacceptable” after they were eliminated by Wrexham.
