12 arrested over Taman Daya brawl, say police

Johor police confirm 12 local men aged 15 to 38 arrested after a pre-dawn brawl at a restaurant in Taman Daya.

JOHOR BAHRU: Police have arrested 12 local men for allegedly being involved in a brawl at a restaurant in Taman Daya early this morning.

Johor police chief CP Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said in a statement today that the suspects, aged between 15 and 38, were arrested between 10 am and 11 am in the Taman Setia Indah area.

He said police received a report that the fight occurred at about 5.40 am, which was recorded as the first information report.

Police also detected a viral video of the incident uploaded by a Facebook user identified as “Lion Wong” in the “Kita Orang Pahang” Facebook group.

“The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting while armed with a weapon, which carries a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction,” he said.

Ab Rahaman said police checks found that three of the 12 suspects had previous criminal records.

He said police would apply for a remand order against all the suspects under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code at the Johor Bahru Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (July 21).

He also urged the public not to speculate or spread unverified information that could affect the ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact the nearest police station, the Johor police hotline at 019-279 2095, or the Johor contingent police headquarters operations room at 07-221 2999.

Earlier, a 2-minute, 37-second video clip showing a group of individuals brawling and hurling plastic chairs at a restaurant in the early hours of this morning went viral on social media.
