Jeli police foiled a human smuggling attempt, arresting a driver and five undocumented Myanmar migrants heading to Gerik for work
JELI: Police foiled a human smuggling attempt involving five undocumented Myanmar migrants during a routine patrol yesterday.
A Jeli police headquarters team intercepted a blue Perodua Bezza in the Jeli Puspen area at 1.30pm.
The driver accelerated when ordered to stop but subsequently skidded and crashed by the roadside.
Jeli police chief Supt Kamarulzaman Harun confirmed the driver’s arrest and the discovery of five Myanmar nationals without valid travel documents.
“Each migrant is believed to have been brought in to work in the Gerik area with a payment of RM200 each,” he said.
Police checks revealed the driver had four previous drug-related offences and tested positive for methamphetamine.
The case is being investigated under Section 55E and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
Authorities are also applying Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing public servants from carrying out their duties.
A remand order has been sought for all detainees under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code and the Immigration Act. – Bernama
