Flood evacuees rise in Sabah and Sarawak, unchanged in Johor

Flood evacuees in Sabah and Sarawak increase slightly, with 1,777 people across three states as Johor numbers remain stable.

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of flood evacuees in Sabah and Sarawak rose slightly this afternoon, while the situation in Johor remained unchanged.

A total of 1,777 evacuees were recorded across the three states as of 4 pm.

In Sabah, the figure increased to 1,418 people from 498 families, up from 1,399 people this morning.

The Sabah Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) Secretariat attributed the rise to more victims in Tenom and Beaufort.

Beaufort recorded the highest number with 595 people from 198 families.

Two new relief centres were opened in Beaufort at Masjid Darul Ikhlas, Kampung Batandok Lubak, and Dewan Sri Dayang Shahbandar.

In Tenom, evacuees rose to 563 people following the opening of a new centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Saga.

The flood situation in Kota Belud improved, with evacuees declining to 260 people after one centre closed.

In Sarawak, 332 people from 109 families remained at the relief centre at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bekenu in Miri.

All evacuees are from eight villages in the Bekenu area.

In Johor, the number of evacuees was unchanged at 27 people from nine families.

They are being housed at the Kampung Batu Badak community hall in Segamat.

The centre has been accommodating evacuees from two villages since Dec 28.
