Malaysia will provide RM500 each to Indonesian students in the country affected by the Sumatra disaster, as a gesture of goodwill and solidarity.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will provide a contribution of RM500 each to Indonesian students studying here who have been affected by the recent floods and landslides in Sumatra.
The Prime Minister’s Office announced the aid as a gesture of goodwill and friendship between the two neighbouring nations.
It said affected students should register with their respective educational institutions to coordinate and channel the assistance according to need.
“Malaysia expresses its sympathy and condolences to the Government of Indonesia and all its people for the disaster that befell Aceh and North Sumatra,” the statement read.
It added that Malaysia stands in solidarity with those going through this difficult time.
Devastating floods and landslides hit three provinces in Sumatra at the end of November following prolonged heavy rains.
The Indonesian National Disaster Mitigation Agency reported that as of December 10, the death toll had reached 969 people with 252 still missing.
The disaster damaged at least 158,000 houses across 52 affected provinces.
