EC denies special surveillance claims in Sabah state election

Election Commission dismisses allegations of targeted surveillance on candidates and parties during Sabah polls campaign period

KOTA KINABALU: The Election Commission has denied allegations that its enforcement team is conducting special surveillance on specific candidates or political parties during the Sabah state election campaign.

EC secretary Datuk Khairul Idrus described the claims as baseless in a statement issued today.

He urged any party with concerns to file official complaints with the EC or relevant authorities regarding suspected election law violations.

The clarification follows recent allegations by a candidate who claimed EC officers were trailing their party’s campaign activities.

Khairul explained that the enforcement team operates under the Election Offences Act 1954.

Their role involves monitoring campaign activities and advising all parties to comply with election laws.

This ensures the integrity and smooth conduct of the state polls, he added.

Polling day for the Sabah election is scheduled for November 29.

Early voting will take place on November 25.

A total of 1,784,843 voters are eligible to cast their ballots in the election.

This includes 1,760,417 regular voters and 24,426 military and police personnel with their spouses.

The EC maintains its commitment to conducting fair and transparent elections throughout the campaign period. – Bernama
