Apple announces John Ternus as its new CEO from September, with Tim Cook transitioning to executive chairman after 13 years leading the company.
ISTANBUL: Apple has named John Ternus as its next chief executive officer. Tim Cook will transition to the role of executive chairman of the board from September 1.
The iPhone maker stated the change follows a long-term succession plan and was approved unanimously by its board. Cook will remain CEO through the summer to ensure a smooth handover.
Ternus is currently Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering. He has spent 25 years at the company and will also join its board of directors.
This marks Apple’s first CEO transition since 2011. Cook succeeded the company’s co-founder, Steve Jobs, at that time.
Arthur Levinson, the non-executive chairman for 15 years, will become lead independent director. The board changes also take effect on September 1.
In a related move, Johny Srouji was immediately named chief hardware officer. He takes over the hardware organisation previously led by Ternus.
