A university student’s remand extended for three days as police seize a Quran and investigate 28 reports over alleged online insults to Islam.
KUANTAN: The remand order against a university student detained over alleged online insults to Islam has been extended for three days.
Kuantan police chief ACP Ashari Abu Samah said the 21-year-old’s remand, which expired today, was extended until March 3 on instructions from the deputy public prosecutor.
He stated that police also seized a copy of the Quran believed to have been used by the student.
The Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah student was initially detained on February 25.
The case involves a viral image showing a foot on the Quran alongside a screenshot of an alleged social media post.
Police are investigating under Section 298 of the Penal Code, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said yesterday the investigation paper was complete and referred for further action.
Nationwide, police have received 28 reports regarding the case.
