Large-scale avalanche kills two skiers in French Alps

Two off-piste skiers died in a major avalanche near Saint-Veran in the French Alps, part of a deadly season that has claimed over 20 lives.

SAINT-VERAN: A large-scale avalanche has killed two off-piste ski tourers in the French Alps.

The men died on Saturday afternoon near the village of Saint-Veran, known as the highest village in the French Alps.

Gap prosecutor Marion Lozac’hmeur told AFP the victims, born in 1997 and 1991, were part of an unguided group of four.

The avalanche swept down the north side of the Tete de Longet mountain peak.

The other two skiers in the group were unharmed, Lozac’hmeur added.

An autopsy has been ordered as part of an investigation into the cause of death.

Avalanches have already claimed the lives of more than 20 skiers across the French, Swiss and Austrian Alps so far this season.
