Tourist in Langkawi alleges scooter rental shop charged her RM1,000 for minor damages

A tourist and a shop owner in Langkawi clash over scooter damage charges, with conflicting claims about a RM1,000 fee circulating on TikTok.

A viral video on TikTok recently showed a tourist claiming that a scooter rental shop had charged her RM1,000 for a dent and other minor damages.

According to two TikTok videos, the first starting off with the shop owner saying that he would “maybe” charge RM1,000 for the damages.

The video then cuts to the woman commenting on the owner’s customer service, alleging that he was “laughing” at her. Moments later, the shop owner approached the woman and demanded that she pay for the damages.

In the second video, the woman demanded that the owner return her RM100 deposit.

Following the circulation of the tourist’s videos, the owner shared his side of the story, alleging that he did not ask her to pay RM1,000 and instead claimed that he only charged RM400 for the damages.

In a TikTok video, the owner explained that the tourist returned the scooter after it had fallen and sustained minor damage, including scratches and a misaligned fork, which amounted to RM400.

“She refused to pay and argued a lot with me, so I said that this price was cheaper. If she had gone to another shop, maybe they would have overcharged her up to RM1,000.

“She cut the video to make it seem like I asked her to pay RM1,000,” he alleged.

In a later update on TikTok, the shop owner managed to retrieve the scooter keys from the tourist.

Responding to a comment in another TikTok video, he also claimed that he never received payment for the damages but retained the RM100 deposit.
