DURIAN, the green, spiky fruit with a creamy tasting flesh that possess a special place in the hearts of Malaysians. But let’s be honest, you either love it or hate it. And most recently, we learned that Japan’s very own Prime Minister loves durians too!

During a formal dinner hosted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and his wife, Dato’ Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Ismail, the Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida was presented with a plate of durian.

This was the Japanese Prime Minister’s first experience tasting durian. Kishida could be seen delicately cutting up the durian flesh with cutleries before cautiously consuming it.

In the photograph, Anwar could be seen grinning as he awaited Kishida’s response on the taste of the durian.

The Japanese Prime Minister ate for a few seconds, then responded favourably, indicating that he liked the flavour of the durian as Anwar, Wan Azizah, and the others in the vicinity applauded and clapped.

The wholesome images were posted by photojournalist to the Prime Minister, Sadiq Asyraf on his X account.

Many Malaysians who responded to the post stated that they felt the entire sight seemed so wholesome that thankfully it was captured. Under the post, a user from (X) also added, “When diplomacy is as unique and memorable as the taste of durian - unforgettable!”

How charming, we hope that the strong economic and culinary ties between Malaysia and Japan continue.
